This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 18 Pre-K students each year. These 4 year olds come to school with a variety of backgrounds but all have an incredible excitement for learning. They are curious about everything they hear and see in my classroom. For many of my students, my classroom is their first exposure to literacy.
A foundation for literacy in the Pre-K sets these children up for success as they start their school careers.
It is a wonder to see their faces light up as they are read different books with new characters and storylines. The students enjoy not only hearing the stories but also looking at pictures and creating a story of their own. It is in amazing experience to see these early learners go from learning how to hold a book to reading on their own.
My Project
My students come to school excited and eager to learn. Many of them do not have a strong literary background and have not had stories read to them before. They are excited to meet new characters and hear different types of stories throughout the year. Each day, we read at least one new book together. Books help the students learn social emotional skills such as how to share, identifying feelings and what to do when they feel a certain way. My students also learn the alphabet and many math skills through reading specific books. They also enjoy learning about animals, and different places and people around the world in books.
A variety of book genres in the classroom helps develop crucial literary skills and sets the students up for success in the future.
Not only does it help students academically, but they also develop a love for books and characters. I would love to be able to give my students the best possible literacy experience.
