Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher in an inner city Chicago Public School. 95% of the students here are on free lunch, and 48% speak English as a second language.

Last year, I was honored to receive 8 LeapFrog systems from a generous Donors Choose donor. We are in need of LeapFrog books to put this wonderful gift into use! Second graders are just developing their fluency skills and LeapFrog is a very important tool for them to learn this. Using the rich text combined with the story told through the headphones is definitely a way for students to develop their reading skills.

All of the second graders in the Chicago school district are tested with the Dibels reading program three times a year. I guarantee that if I had these LeapFrog books that their reading fluency would increase dramatically and their scores would greatly improve.

We do reading centers daily in my class. The LeapFrog system would be a wonderful addition to our centers. It would also be something used for the lower students during silent reading.
