Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Maryvale, a neighborhood in Phoenix. Over 95% of our students are on free/reduced lunch, and the majority enter kindergarten with very limited English proficiency.

Learning to read is tough, but learning to read when English is your second language is even tougher!

Despite these challenges, my students rise to the occasion time and time again. They take advantage of every learning opportunity and love a good challenge. Our class motto, selected by the students, is "Nothing is impossible!" and this motto truly drives everything that we do.

My Project

The research is clear: in order for students to develop strong reading skills, they need to be reading, and reading often! I am requesting the books in this project in order to implement the new Rooted in Reading curriculum, a program that teaches critical reading comprehension skills through interactive read-alouds and close read lessons based on high quality texts. In the past years, my students have struggled with reading comprehension, and I'm looking forward to seeing the change with this new program. However, we cannot implement it without these books.

In order for our reading instruction to be effective, we need these high-quality mentor texts!

My students will be much more engaged in their reading lessons when they are getting to hear well-written examples. This strengthens both their reading comprehension and their writing skills on a daily basis.

By having these books ready to go in our classroom, I can make sure that my students are developing a love of reading and are engaged in their reading comprehension lessons every single day! I am requesting a wide range of literature titles to support our reading program.
