My Students

Imagine dreading reading, yet knowing that it is a required subject, and cannot be avoided. Now, imagine opening an engaging, thought-provoking, and exciting book and discovering a world that had never existed before. This happens daily in my 7th grade ELA class, and I'm proud of it!

My students are Title I students, and for many of them, reading is not and has never been a priority at home.

Many of my families are multi-generational and/or single parents living under one roof. All of that being said, I truly love the environment that I teach in and wouldn't change it for anything. After finishing a Holocaust unit recently, I had a student tell me "I never knew this world existed. After reading these books, I wish I could go back in time and change things. I used to hate reading, but you show us a lot of different kinds of stories and worlds, and challenge us to be better. I honestly can say I don't hate this class any more." My kids are learning the value of fighting for change, and I love that literature is giving them one more weapon in their fight.

My Project

My students need a class set of The Giver, as well as Holocaust related literature We Are Witnesses and Holocaust to improve their literacy as well as their interest in reading. My students will use "The Giver" as a novel study. They are at an age where they are starting to want to choose their future, and in reading this novel, they realize that there is a fictional world where choices don't exist. They will use the novel to compare the world from the novel, where the characters have choices made for them, to the world they live in now, where even if they make a wrong choice, there is a lesson to be learned, and relief that they have the ability to choose for themselves. My students will use the Holocaust literature as part of a World War II and Holocaust Unit. The Holocaust literature will provide them examples of paired texts as well as primary source literature, both of which are valuable learning tools at the 7th grade level. The Holocaust literature will also enhance existing novels used in my classroom.

I have never had students so hungry to learn more about a time period than when they are introduced to the Holocaust.

When I have students who used to hate reading begging for more to read, then something is very right. Donations to this project will go a long way to engaging struggling readers, and will be a stepping stone for them to branch out into other genres of their own choosing. I truly appreciate any and all help for my students!
