This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a Title I school, the students are faced with many different challenges. The school provides the students with breakfast and lunch based on the socioeconomic status of the area. Regardless of this, my students crave to learn in a literature rich environment.

I have two classes of 22 enthusiastic learners this year, a total of 44 amazing students!

Our focus is on engaging our students in reading with literature. Our students are excited every year to participate in various book clubs and competitions. The range of readers in my classroom range from 3rd grade to 5th grade and I would like to close the achievement gap using interesting text for the students. The best way for any student to learn is to find an interesting book and just read. That’s what I want to provide my students.

My Project

My students come from different countries and socioeconomic backgrounds. These students are just as different in their reading levels and interests. Having these books will allow the students to read at their level and read something they enjoy. It will allow the students to feel successful at their level and pushing them to the next one.

All students need to be exposed to literature such as James and the Giant Peach, Fish in a Tree, and Matilda and see the wondrous worlds that books can create.

The students will be using these literature books in various ways besides just reading. Students can create their own hands-on activities based on the books that they read or make creative book reports to share with others. They can also make a book corner where they spotlight the books and take ownership in what they read. These books will allow me as a teacher to reach each individual student and the students will become more independent readers. They will finally get to understand the concept of reading for enjoyment.
