My Students

I teach in an urban area. All my students receive free lunch. They often lack the basic needs that we take for granted. They come to school hungry and many unprepared to learn. Most parents cannot provide them with the basic tools they need to succeed in school. Many of my students, who are only eight years old, have already attended two or three schools.

My students come to school curious, wanting to learn and explore in a place that is safe and caring.

I do this by creating an environment that fosters their natural love for learning, a place where they can feel secure and cared about.

My Project

The Science of Reading tells us that students need to have basic phonics skills to become fluent readers. More simply said, decoding plus language comprehension equals reading comprehension.

I want to give my students decodable readers to build their phonemic awareness which in turn will improve their reading fluency and reading comprehension.

And I want my students to have books that have engaging and interesting stories that they will want to read. Books with one of their favorite characters, (Pete The Cat), and comics (one of their favorite genres), and great illustrations that target the phonic skills they need.
