My Students

My students are enthusiastic and curious about everything, including the spider on the floor, the letter B, and how the pencil sharpener works. They come from more than eight different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and include students with special needs and students who have experienced trauma.

Many of my students' parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, and uncles have all attended our neighborhood school and you can feel love and a strong sense of community throughout the building.

Within our diverse school family, one of the things my students are most excited about is each other. They love to learn and play together and our school day is filled with giggles, questions, tinkering, dancing, and conversations. It is a joy and a privilege to get to learn and grow with these amazing humans every day.

My Project

We are 3 weeks into distance learning and I miss real books. Books to hold, books to get close to, books to snuggle into bed with and most of all books I can watch my students fall in love with.

Watching books on a screen cannot compare to holding a real book in your own hands and my students are missing this critical experience.

They deserve to learn in a space lined with books; books about themselves, classic books, books that rhyme, books about letters and numbers, books that show them new people and places, books of all kinds!

Kindergarten is all about experiencing the joy of learning and sharing experiences with each other. I want to give each child as many real books as I can so that even through a computer screen we can turn the pages of our books together, ooh and aah over the illustrations together, giggle and sigh together, and most of fall in love with books together.
