My Students

My resilient, hardworking fifth graders have risen to the challenges of distance learning and have quickly and skillfully adapted to these difficult circumstances. They continue to push themselves academically across all content areas to continue their growth and set themselves up for success as they transition to new middle schools next year.

Our fifth graders will begin their final year of elementary school participating in person learning, following a truly challenging year.

Each year, the first six weeks are dedicated to building community and relationships among students.

My Project

Setting up a classroom library is central to promoting a love of reading and a strong reading community each year. Carefully curating high-interest reads that are responsive to students and reflect their hobbies and experiences is crucial to engaging all learners in reading instruction.

Books, books, and more books is designed to provide readers with high-interest non-fiction texts that engage readers and through which they are challenged to think critically and examine information author craft moves.

Without these materials it becomes nearly impossible to teach students to develop the high-level analytical skills they will need as they prepare for middle school and beyond.

From books about sports and space to environmentalism and animals, non-fiction books teach readers about the topic, but also about the genres of informational and persuasive writing. Through this work, they learn to think critically and dig beyond the words of the page to a deeper understanding of the texts they read and the author's purpose.
