My Students
Teaching in Alaska is an experience like no other. Unfortunately, this school year is also like no other, as we deal with the consequences of quarantines and varying school schedules. We are a small fishing village located on Bristol Bay. To access our village, you must make a plan or a boat ride. It makes life interesting! The Yup'ik culture has strong ties here and our district strives to revitalize the language and way of life among our students.
For as much as I teach my students this year, I hope I also learn from them.
They are teaching me about their culture, while I'm teaching them language and math!
My Project
These books will be used for individual reading assignments and whole class readings. Reading about places and events are a fantastic way to bring new ideas and experiences to students.
Reading a book is how most of my students experience the world outside of our village.
Being able to provide them with material that will challenge their minds and keep their interest is important.
I try to bring books that will introduce my students to places and people within our world and throughout our history. Students learn to make connections to other subjects if they have some background knowledge first.
