My Students

I'm a third, fourth, and fifth grade Special Education teacher in Red Hook, Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch. I teach in a self-contained classroom where all of my students have mild to moderate learning disabilities.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

My Project

Every week, my students borrow at least 5 books from the classroom library to read throughout the week at home. With 12 students in my class, that means that at any given time 60+ books are checked out of the classroom library. My current supply of books is over six years old and has seen some serious wear and tear due to this constant use! Due to the limited funding for basic supplies in my school district, new books to supplement my classroom library are not possible. As a Special Education teacher, I strive to incorporate literature and reading activities into my classroom as often as possible. While I have a lot of books available for my lower level students, this project focuses on books for my students that are still below grade level but are stronger readers than the rest of their classmates.

With these new additions to the classroom library, my students will be able to continue to borrow high-interest books from the classroom library on a weekly basis.

I am also requesting a few science and math book collections to round out our collection and storage bins to house all of these new books in. By helping to place books into the hands of my students, a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
