My students need multiple copies of various books such as Tale of Despereaux and The Chocolate Touch in order to participate in class Read Alouds and Literature Circles.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever read a book you couldn't put down because you wanted to read more? My students are so excited about reading that they always want to read MORE! The books in this project will help support my students love of reading in both literature circles and class read alouds.
My students are extremely excited to learn.
They are eager to read and discuss the stories with their classmates and teachers. However, we have trouble accessing multiple copies of books that interest them. The students are always asking for specific books that unfortunately, we do not have the funds to purchase. I believe that even the most reluctant readers will get excited and be engaged with new sets of books.
We are a Title 1, high poverty level school and many students do not have access to high quality literature. There is a high EL population and these students need access to books that will teach them new skills and reinforce vocabulary. However, many of the the students do not have the resources at home to continue their learning. Most parents do not have money to purchase books to read and they do not have the time or transportation to take their child to the library to get books.
My Project
My students love reading books however, we do not have access to multiple copies of chapter books at various reading levels. With sets of books such as The Chocolate Touch, Because of Winn Dixie and Nate the Great, my students will be able to form literature circles during Reader's Workshop and conduct class read alouds at the end of the day. They will be able to read a book and then meet with their groups to not only discuss what they have read but also complete a variety of activities.
The students will facilitate their own learning by deciding when their group will meet as well as setting the next reading assignment. They will respond to a variety of questions that will guide their discussions as they continue on a journey through their book. Students will also complete activities after finishing each class read aloud. The activities in each literature circle and read aloud will help support our 3rd grade reading standards.
Students will also be encouraged to work together to create a final product.
This could be a lapbook showing various aspects of the book; a diorama displaying the characters, a poster laying out the plot of the story, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Do you remember when you were in school and you read books with friends or the teacher? Just imagine how excited my students will be when they open a new book! Instilling a love of reading will help them be successful in both school and life!
