Books, Bag, and Comprehension

Help me give my students the opportunity to take a bag of age-appropriate books home on a weekly basis and increase their comprehension, fluency, and self-esteem.

My Students

I teach two classes of eager, dynamic, and diversified second graders at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic area in Mississippi. I have an inclusion class because several of my children have special needs. Many of my students are underprivileged and walk to school from a public housing apartment complex. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students enjoy reading, but most of them do not have age appropriate books in their home to read.

My desire is to change that. I need help to expose them to all the great benefits of reading and give them a sense of pride as they read books in their own home.

My Project

My classroom is a literacy-rich environment. The class library has a variety of age appropriate books that hold the students' attention. They enjoy reading the books and taking comprehension tests on them. However, the majority of my students only get to read those types of books while they are at school. Many of them are not exposed to print in their home at all. This serves as a barrier to the wonderful world of reading. I would like to change that for my bright, motivated, and eager students. I have chosen two sets of books and some bags to place the books in. The copy paper will be used to print the reports after students take Accelerated Reader tests.

The Books, Bag, and Comprehension Project would provide an opportunity for students to choose and read age-appropriate books in the comfort of their home.

This will strengthen their desire to read, thereby increasing their reading comprehension. Furthermore, it would also increase parental involvement.
