Books as Windows and Mirrors: Latinx

Help me give my students books with Latinx characters so my students can use them as windows and mirrors into culture!

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of them have experienced challenges we adults could not imagine. Our diverse classrooms bring many different cultures and languages. School is a safe and engaging place for all students with different backgrounds to come together to play, build relationships, experience, learn and grow safely. My readers come to school eager and ready to engage in their day. We work hard to meet the needs of each of these students both academically and socially.

My Project

In the last two years we have had many new students start at our school that are immigrants from Latin America. Our library is lacking in books that have Latinx characters.

It is important for all students to be able to see themselves in the books that they read.

The books in this project have main characters who are Latinx or are about prominent Latinx people from history. The books will serve as windows for my Latinx students to see themselves experiencing the same things as the characters. These books will also serve as windows for my other students. They will learn about customs and cultural traditions celebrated by my Latinx students.
