My Students

My students are diverse in every possible way. Our school is not technically considered Title I, but we are very close. By not qualifying to be Title I, we do not get a lot of extra funds like many schools in our area do. My school is in a rural area of NC and has a small community feel. Many of our students love coming to our school because of the warm, family-like atmosphere.

Even though we are considered a rural school, we serve nearly 1,000 elementary students every day.

They are coming to school looking for a place to feel safe, loved, and learn.

My Project

These books will serve as mirrors that reflect student heritage and windows into worlds that they've never experienced.

Books and read alouds have the power to bring us together and encourage students to appreciate differences.

These books will be available for all to access via our school library. They will be used in lessons with preschoolers through 5th graders. Our library collection is in desperate need for books that reflect our student population and that celebrate diversity and inclusion. This book list has characters and themes that are primarily focused on Latinx and African American heritage.
