Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build, and to read. As the ELD teacher for kindergarten and first grade, I spend my time pushing into classrooms to teach English language learners. We are about to go 100 percent in person and it's going to be tight quarters in our small classrooms.

My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.

Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.

My Project

These books are going to be a wonderful resource to add to our curriculum. We often add interesting titles to broaden our kids background knowledge so they can grapple with more difficult subjects and speak confidently about their reading. Teachers model this with diverse read alouds and higher level questioning. The academic discourse that comes from a good read aloud lesson is a great way to get kids thinking and building their brains. These thematic books are subjects we cover in both kindergarten and first grade and all the books will be shared with both grades at our school.
