Books are Fun Part II: Literature Circles

My students need five copies each of five different books which include "Walk Two Moons", "Monster", "I Have Lived A Thousand Years", "Running Loose" and "Breathing Underwater".

I believe that reading is the key to my students' success. The more they read (and the more they learn to love reading) the more they can grow and succeed in their future. With the huge emphasis on preparing students for standardized testing it is even more difficult to inspire them to love reading. Lack of available and current books can make this even more difficult. In order to encourage my students to love reading during the final quarter at school I will be conducting literature circles. Students will choose from a collection of books and with a handful of students reading the same book they will go through the process of reading and exploring the book together. This will be a great break for them post standardized testing in the spring. I have selected a variety of books that my students will be interested in. They range from fantasy books, books about teens their own age and historical fiction about the Holocaust (since my students were fascinated by a previous unit on Anne Frank). By giving students a choice on novels they will be even more invested in their learning!
