Books are Fun! Figurative Language through Literature

My students need 30 copies each of "Seedfolks", by Paul Fleischman and "The House on Mango Street", by Sandra Cisneros.

I believe that reading is the key to my student's success. The more they read (and the more they learn to love reading) the more they can grow and succeed in their future. This year I am teaching both 7th and 8th grade students as part of a new split-core system that my school is utilizing. This provides new challenges for me as a teacher as I balance the needs and standards of both grades I teach.

Many of my students do not read as much as they should. Last year when presented with the assignment to read a novel over the course of a quarter some of my 8th graders freaked out! I want my students to read more books, plain and simple. That is why I try to incorporate full length novels as much as possible in class. While my school provides many resources there is a lack of current, popular class novel sets for teachers to use. I hate relying on textbooks and feel that novels are much more beneficial to my students. When I do have several hard copies of a class novel the students fight over who gets to use the real book.

During the 3rd quarter the English department at our school focuses on figurative language and poetry. In my mission to get my students to read more I also like to incorporate a novel that aligns with the standards for this quarter. "Seedfolks" will be for my 7th grade classes while "The House on Mango Street" will be utilized by my 8th graders. Both books feature many examples of figurative language and themes about community and acceptance.

Your help will provide enough books for my 7th and 8th graders to each have their own copy of the book, no more fighting over the copies! Through reading these novels I hope my students will not only learn some important lessons but gain a love of reading as well!
