My Project

I'm super excited to be going back to the classroom after 3 years of being an instructional coach. As I think about the learning community I will be serving and the amazing 5th graders who will be in my class, my first priority is to create a space of belonging where students feel safe to take risks and learn alongside each other. One way to create this culture is to provide reading materials and engaging lessons that reflect the students in front of me.

An inclusive classroom library is an important component because it fosters student engagement, empathy, and a sense of belonging by reflecting the diversity of my students and the world around us.

Books also provide opportunities for students to learn about different cultures, experiences, and perspectives, expanding their understanding and critical thinking skills. Ultimately, inclusive libraries help students develop a love of reading and, most importantly, an opportunity for agency, sharing who they are and a connection to their own stories.
