Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students brim with untapped potential. They are curious, creative and love hands-on projects. Though they all have special learning needs, not one of them can be defined by any one label. They are each unique and a work-in-progress, much like their teacher!
My students love technology and will willingly do all school work on computers!
I hope to ignite a passion for science and nurture their passion for technology so that they can become inventors and scientists of the future.
My Project
Reading grade-level texts in the different content areas is a challenge for my students with special needs. Consequently, most of them prefer to watch videos than read. As their teacher, I know I need to guide them towards a more balanced approach of consuming information. And I need to make them see that reading is a 21st century skill.
This is where the DK books can come in.
These books include rich and colorful visuals to explain complex science concepts. There are artfully placed insets with questions and answers and a plethora of well-crafted non-fiction features such as timelines, table of contents, indices, maps, glossaries, and more. I am confident that if I have these books in my classroom, my students will be motivated to pick them up and use them for a variety of tasks such as generating questions on a topic, conducting research, supporting an argument, etc.
These books will kindle my students' curiosity towards grade-level STEM concepts while increasing their critical thinking skills. Please help me take this small step towards reducing the under-representation of Students with Disabilities in STEM.
In addition to these books, I am also requesting a set of three tabletop easel pads that my students can use during collaborative group projects. Thank you so much for your support!
