Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a music teacher in an inner-city school and my students come from low-income households. Many of them come from diverse families and English is their second language. Literacy in music is very important because we tend to have very low reading scores. I want to show my students that the language of music is universal. I am looking to introduce and show them all of the possibilities music has to offer. This generation is very motivated by hands-on learning and by learning trying new things. I am looking to fulfill their curiosity about music and the arts by incorporating literacy and various musical learning opportunities. I want to show them, that with music anything is possible!
My Project
My students come from very low income housing. They generally aren't read to at home. They love to hear stories while at school. I want to foster a love of reading along with a love of music. I'm looking to mix my music class with books about music.
My students will love to hear stories about songs, musical artists and how music applies to their everyday life.
They will learn about culture and kindness through music and these books. Every single one of these books will be made into a special lesson where the students interact with the music.
