My Students
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way" - George Evans.
I teach at a school for the deaf that serves pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade.
The school follows a bilingual philosophy of integrating both American Sign Language and English in all academic content areas. All of the staff at this school are proficient in ASL and every child has 100% communication access in both languages. Our students attend to our school from neighboring cities within 50 miles radius with various economic background.
I teach middle school English which includes 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The students are grouped according to their reading and writing level regardless of the grade that they are in. Some of my students read on grade level and some read significantly below grade level ranging from 2nd grade to 4th grade reading level. Some of my students have additional disabilities such as ADHD or learning disability.
My Project
Our school does not have a designated library. My middle schoolers would check out books for independent reading from my classroom or from the small shelves in the middle school pod area. My goal is to grow the classroom library with books that interest every reader and with books available at their reading level. The books requested are some of the titles that are on my students' "wish list" or "to read" list and the other titles are books that are newly published that I think may be of interest to my students. I'm also requesting for new fidgets to replace the ones that we have. My students often use them to help focus on their academic work, in fact, all of my students have used them and shows benefit from using them. Our fidgets are worn out from use and it's time for new ones.
New books for our classroom library will help my students grow as a reader and close the gap in their language.
Fidgets will also help my students stay focused on their academic work.
