My Students

My students are a diverse group of 4th and 5th graders in a small K-8 school in San Francisco. They have a vast array of abilities, passions, concerns, and curiosities, and they take great interest in directing their own learning. Our school strives to provide a positive, safe learning environment for all students, and we employ project-based learning and promote deep self-reflection to push our students. Half of our students are English learners and 70% receive free or reduced-price lunches.

My Project

My students LOVE to read! These avid readers deserve access to engaging titles that are reflective of the many cultures and personalities in the room. Our classroom library supports 44 fourth and fifth grade students. We currently do not have enough titles to support this many engaged readers. What a wonderful problem to have!! This DonorsChoose.org project would go to building our classroom library as well as a few flexible seating options for my students who need to move around a little bit more. Comfy pillows and wiggle seats will provide options for students to self select a place around the room that helps them work best.

Our classroom library is a warm and inviting space.

My students love to read on the carpet, but need a few comfy pillows and bean bags to really get lost in their books. A cozy space helps readers dive into their stories and really focus on the books. I know the giant pillows and lounger are perfect for supporting this love of reading.

Our social studies unit this year focuses on California history. We need more literature sharing stories from Native Indian cultures and narratives of various immigrant perspectives. Many of the books here, such as Uprooted, Number the Stars, and Esperanza Rising are about these cultural experiences.
