Books and Butterflies! An Outdoor Learning Space Designed by Students

My Project

NLA is an environmentally-focused charter school. Our curriculum is centered around the five pillars of environmental education: awareness, knowledge, attitudes, skills and action. The seeds, plants, and landscaping fabric will help us expand our curriculum in all these areas and create a permanent space for students to gather outside for learning activities.

This project not only funds an outdoor learning space; it will fund a project-based learning initiative for our school's transition students, who thrive with hands-on learning tasks.

The space will be entirely designed by these students, who will reach into several content areas to complete the task: they will use their biology skills to research native Minnesota plants, their math skills to design the garden and project how much soil and mulch will be needed, and their language arts skills to create signage teaching users of the garden about the natural elements that surround them.

As people who have chosen to attend an environmentally-focused charter school, my students love and expect to be outside. They are the most kind, creative, hard-working, and enthusiastic people I have ever met, and they deserve a beautiful outdoor learning space.
