Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My children worry more about where the next meal is coming from than going to the library to check out a book. They often wear the same clothes day after day. My students worry about the littlest things that most of us take for granted.

My second graders are eager learners who often tell me that they don't have books at home or their parents do not have time to read to them.

I want this program in my school so that parents or family members can come into the classroom, read with their little one, and take a book home. We provide breakfast, coffee, and juice. I teach in the first K-12 school in Colorado. We are a creative arts school placed in southwest Denver. We want nothing more than for our children to see school as an extension of home...where they can feel confident, strong, and believe in who and what they are.

My Project

One of my little girls came to me yesterday and said "Mrs. W., my family doesn't have any books at home, can I take some from our library to read to my dad?" Another little guy ran over and said the same thing. I didn't know that he was taking books from our classroom library and bringing them home to read. I gave each of them 5 books from the library to keep. Their parents came in and thanked me for helping their children. We want to give parents, grandparents, or any other family member, a chance to come into our classrooms, spend some quality time reading and talking with their child where there is no money, food, or social concerns. This is the time to just be. It is our hope that Books and Breakfast become a tradition in our school, but we need help getting it started.

Your donation of books will enable each of our students to go home with a new book after each Books and Breakfast event.

By the end of the year, students will have 9 books to have at home so they may read with other family members. It is my hope that your donation of books will also inspire others in our community to contribute and donate to Books and Breakfast. Thank you so much!
