Books and Books and More Good Books

Help me give my students access to more books that are reflective of who they are and the struggles they face.

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Bosley's classroom raised $499

My Students

My students are struggling readers. Most are not reading at grade level and some are multiple years behind. They live in high poverty area. My students have limited access to books outside of school and our city is a book desert. My students need more books in their homes. My students need to see themselves in the books they read. They need to see the situations they face and learn the skills to overcome and succeed no matter the obstacles.

To overcome these reading deficiencies, we need to build a strong reading culture because:

-reading improves prosocial behavior

-reading improves empathy

-reading improves writing

-reading improves vocabulary

-reading decreases stress

-reading improves decision-making

-reading can help with memory and lessening dementia

-motivated readers earn more degrees and therefore more income over their lifetime

-motivated readers typically live longer than their counterparts

-motivated readers volunteer more, engage in more the arts, and more civic engagement - this means voting too.

Aren't all of those things what we want for our students?

My Project

Students will be able to select a book to keep for their birthday or another special occasion in their lives. The goal is to give the student their own copy in the hopes they can not only see themselves in the book, but also share with family and friends to lessen the book desert in our community.

Access to books is critical for developing a strong reading culture.

We want our students, teachers, and staff to be reading as much as possible. Help me to help them in bringing quality books into their lives and homes.
