Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title I school, where 100% of students qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch. All of my students come from low-income neighborhoods, where most parents have to work countless hours to provide basic needs for their children. Needless to say, the pandemic has only made their financial situation worse.

My students are loving, energetic, and enthusiastic learners who come from diverse cultural backgrounds and the majority are learning English as a second language.

This is my students' very first "school experience". Many of them have limited previous exposure to academic and social settings outside of their homes. I want to make their "first school" experience the best experience possible, given these unprecedented times. I need your help to provide my young scholars equal access to resources and materials that will allow them to grow academically and shine individually even through distance learning.

My Project

My young scholars are in their second semester of remote learning and it has not been easy. Many of their household members have tested positive for Covid which has completely altered their immediate interaction with their loved ones. My students are facing many challenges and trauma related to Covid that at their very young age they do not understand. Many of them express frustration and anger, but do not know what to do with these emotions. I want to use picture books as foundations for art projects that will strengthen my students' resiliency and help them understand their emotions in order to self regulate. Giving these kids tools to express their feelings and ideas will support their learning in all areas so they do not fall further behind in their studies and help them grow as individuals.
