This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I have hit the ground running and we are already implementing independent learning stations. I would like to have a Library Corner as one of the stations. Unfortunately, we have inherited a room with an inadequate classroom library and no comfortable places to sit and enjoy a book.
I am a kindergarten teacher at a Title I school in Southern California.
One hundred percent of our students are eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program. Forty percent of the students are English learners. Poverty, gang violence and drugs are prevalent in this inner-city neighborhood. Despite these challenging circumstances or perhaps because of them, my students love coming to school and are eager to learn. They deserve to have an inviting classroom that is conducive to learning. Sadly, the economy does not seem to be improving and our school cannot replace worn books or purchase nice furniture to create an appealing classroom.
My Project
The two sets of books I have requested will add 40 different titles to our classroom library. These Level A books have simple sentences, predictable text and sight words that make them appropriate for four- and five-year-olds who are just beginning to learn to read. I have also requested one comfortable, kid-sized chair to start our collection of cozy seating options for the Library Corner.
Because many of my students do not have a reading routine at home, it is even more important to assist them in developing good habits in the classroom so they become lifelong readers and learners.
Your donation will help provide my kindergarteners with an environment that encourages reading.
