Books & Activities to Promote Kindness, Compassion, and Emotional Regulation

Help me give my students a bundle of books to teach and inspire compassion, self-love, and emotional regulation, as well as supplies for our school’s communication station!

My Project

One of our big tasks in early elementary is to create an environment where children can learn how to socially interact with kindness and respect, in addition to gaining an understanding of other people’s experiences and using that understanding to guide their actions and words to be compassionate and caring community members.

Books are such an integral part of learning, and especially for our young learners, stories are often some of the most engaging and easy to understand forms of teaching.

When teaching students about what it means to be kind, understanding, and compassionate towards others, it is so helpful to have books on hand that demonstrate these concepts in a developmentally appropriate, fun, and meaningful way. The books on this list will not only help introduce important skills and concepts to students, but they will do so in ways that encourage the students to perspective take and self reflect on their own experiences.

In addition to the books requested, we are hoping to create a “Communication Station” where students are encouraged to write and/or draw letters and cards to others. Students can give letters and cards as a way to express gratitude, to offer words of encouragement and care to someone in need of kindness and support, to recognize an accomplishment, etc. This station will help to encourage the regular practice of considering how others may be feeling, and then taking action to help improve their experiences in a tangible and kid-friendly way.

Our students will learn about and develop compassion through reading, having group discussions, self-reflecting, and then practicing acts of kindness. We will see the positive impact of these strategies in many ways, including students reporting an increased sense of belonging at school and witnessing students comforting others and taking action to help fellow students in need.
