Help me give my students engaging books with characters who are as diverse as they are. They need books by and about people of color, people from other cultures, and people in the LGBTQIA community.

My Students

I am so excited to embark on a new school year with an amazing and diverse set of 5th graders. My 5th graders come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Each bringing a beautifully fresh and unique perspective into our classroom community.

I am as excited about teaching this incredible group, as I am about learning from them.

My Project

Children learn from books. Studies show that children are more likely to hold onto lessons from book characters who look and think like them. Students are, also, far more likely to be engaged and excited about reading if they have access to books that they find relatable. This year my goal is to lead a classroom where all students feel that their unique voices are heard- a classroom built around inclusion.

The first step to an inclusive classroom is through the books that students hear and have access to.

In my project, I am asking for books written by and about people of color, people from different cultures, and people from the LGBTQIA community. These books reflect the diversity found within my classroom. During this initial period of distance learning, these books will be used as read-aloud books for my class. When we are able to safely return to the classroom, these books will be added to the classroom library so that all students can access and enjoy them.
