Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our scholars are a phenomenal group of kids from highly diverse backgrounds. Our socioeconomic diversity allows us to bring together students from various communities throughout our city to create a unique, collaborative environment. No matter where they come from, our scholars enter class excited and eager to learn. A typical day in our classroom is filled with creativity, passion, and energy!
My students have unlimited potential and believe in their own infinite possibilities.
Often, many of them come to class lacking basic, necessary supplies. They dream helping their families and reaching their full potential. With your help, we can acquire the tools and skills to reach those goals.
My Project
I am requesting graphic novels and books that feature minority main characters! Students will use these books to participate in various reading activities, but ultimately, the main goal is for them to spend time reading! With all of the changes and reforms happening in education, one thing that remains constant is that the best way to become a better reader is to read books!
Of the 3,600 children's books published in the United States each year, less than 10% feature minority main characters.
It has been said that when you read, books should be a "window" and a "mirror." In other words, you should be able to learn about the lives of others, but you should also be able to reinforce your own culture and life experiences. Having the opportunity to read books about characters with experiences similar to their own will truly show them the power of reading!
