My students need science books to build a science library in my classroom!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Lesser's classroom raised $574
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are NOT surrounded by books! They have a simple textbook that has no depth and nothing else. We are focusing on raising literacy but how can we do that with no books for them to get their hands on!?
My students are in California in one of the most at risk districts.
They come from a wide variety of homes and 61% receive free or reduced lunch. They are all motivated and work hard but do not have access to reading materials at different levels. Unfortunately, many of my students test 1 to 2 years and sometimes 3 years behind their grade level in reading skills and content knowledge.
My Project
This is only the beginning of a library that I hope will by the end of the year fill one wall of my classroom! To start the library I chose an array of books from various levels. I have included books from Dr. Seuss to entry level college textbooks. I think that different types of texts fit different kids and I would like mine to have access to the ones that best fit their levels and learning needs. I have also focused on books that talk about the geology of California and the Earthquakes that effect us. Since my kids are in an area that is heavily effected by earthquakes they need to be given every opportunity to read about it and understand it.
Kids must have books about the things they are learning.
During free reading time Sports Illustrated might be fun to read but it does not increase my students content knowledge. Let's put information into my kids hands! Let's build them a library that will fill a wall of my classroom as well as their minds.
