Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inner-city children, mostly English language learners, with diverse backgrounds and unique histories full of triumphs and challenges. Many of them are recent migrants seeking asylum in the US and are now in my classroom. Every day, we come together to learn and "grow our brains"! I try to reinforce this idea in every lesson they experience. They are a caring, energetic bunch, who are eager to learn and ready to collaborate. In our classroom, learning about and from each other is as common as learning the three Rs (Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic). My students learn that more can be accomplished whey they work together and when there is solidarity. This comes in handy every day as they work to view challenges, both social and academic, as an opportunity for growth. My kiddies are strong, empathetic, and capable learners!
My Project
My students need a wide range of 44 book titles that teach about local and global issues, as well as promote tolerance and social justice. By contributing to this project, you will help enrich my students' classroom library and the quality of learning that takes place during several units of study.
These books will help ensure that my students have choice and see themselves reflected in the literature that they read.
Whether it's during a read aloud, readers workshop, or writers workshop, having a wide range of books to choose from makes a difference and promotes student ownership of the learning that is happening.
In addition, because the books I've selected address important issues that affect us locally and globally, they will also help my students develop critical thinking, tolerance, and empathy as they practice literacy skills.
