Book'n the Family Along with Reading

My Students

"A home without books is like a bird without a tree." Unfortunately, most of the children in our preschool program do not have access to books in their homes. Children need to have books in their homes in addition to their classroom to develop a love of reading.

I work at a school that has a high level of poverty.

The preschool program is state funded for children who because of their economic status have been determined to be at risk for failure in school. Many come from single parent families and some are not English speakers. With all of these factors, they are eager group who love stories, games, and figuring out how the world works.

My Project

The preschool teachers have designed four parent nights to help educate the parents of these young children in areas that we have observed many lack the skills in. The parents will listen to speakers talk about their area of specialty, such as positive parenting, healthy eating, talking with your child, and developing games to play with their children at home. There will be a meal provided and child care. In addition, I was hoping to provide a book that goes with the theme of the night for the parents to share with their children at home.

The more books that are available to parents and children in their homes, the more opportunities parents have to read with their children.

School needs to be a partnership between the school and home. For a child to become a proficient reader, they need to have access to books throughout their day.
