Bookends For Our Library

My students need bookends. We've reorganized the entire library for easier access and so our books are better protected. We've created more space and ran out of bookends.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is our school library. Each semester I have between 10 and 30 library practice students. We go through the day with my assigning them clerical duties, and more importantly, teaching them valuable information literacy skills.

I arrived last year from a far more underprivileged school and was met with pleasant surprise by our school's calm and welcoming environment.

We are a high school so our students are on their way to becoming adults, with my particular library practice students being seniors who have completed most of their credits. Our school is located in an underprivileged, but developing area of Los Angeles County. Our student body is made up of immigrant Hispanic and Asian families. We house three schools on our campus. Our home school is split into small learning communities. Within these SLCs, our students develop a sense of team and belonging, working toward a common goal. Our school is very college-oriented. In fact, one of our requirements for graduation is applying to college, any college, including community college. Not all our students are college-bound, but we do encourage everyone to explore that option.

My Project

Upon arriving at our school, I started an overhaul of the library collection. This included weeding obsolete, worn, and multiple copies of materials. Once this was completed, we went on to redesign the collection. This took the books out of their choking spaces on the shelves allowing for easier browsing and borrowing with less damage to the books as patrons don’t have to struggle with the book to remove it from the shelf. The result of our overhaul is that we have fallen very short of book ends. Where before the books were packed into the shelves without need for support, they were not easily removed for browsing. Now there is a space, but the books need something to hold them up. The bookends we are requesting will help protect the books, extend their life, and allow our students to use them for longer.

The redesign of our library's fiction, non-fiction, and reference section has made for a streamlined book browsing experience.

The fiction has now has paperback and hardback editions together, there are separate shelves for foreign language books, pictures books, and graphic novels. The non-fiction and reference sections there is distinct delineation and signage for the Dewey Classification. Here, we were able to create more space for the books for facility of perusal and circulation.
