Booked On A Feeling: Real Reading with Real Authors

Help me give my students connect more with real-world topics in amazing literature by continuing our much loved book club, culminating with two virtual author visits!

My Project

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" ~Dr. Seuss. When students move to middle school, sadly the library can become a less frequented place. My goal is for ALL students to be able to find something they love to read. I want to promote reading for pleasure as much as possible. Therefore, I have created a Book Club during our advisory time for any 6th-8th grader who would like to join. We have already doubled in size from first semester to second, also having exponentially grown with our insightful book talks.

My students are so invested in reading that they have reached out to authors, created projects for other classes relating to reading and writing, and even hosted their own book donation drives.

I would like nothing more than to continue to feed that flame for reading. Building a trusting environment, students volunteer to read, yet we also respect listening. We pause to have amazing discussions, make predictions, expand our empathy for neurodiversity and mental health awareness, while increasing our vocab and comprehension. Reading is found in all areas of academics. I met author Elly Swartz 3 years ago and was immediately hooked on her character building books. We have since become friends. Elly has offered to do an Author Visit free for my students!

Another goal is to get more books into the homes of our students. These students are able to keep the books we read in our clubs to add to their personal collections. There's nothing like the feeling of a book in your hand! Book Clubs become a personal experience, students can notate in their books if they choose, and create a literature-rich environment. For this reason, funding is necessary and appreciated.
