My Project
Our elementary is a low-income K-5 school. Despite being a low-income, Title I school, we do not have low expectations for our students!
In an effort to promote student excitement for reading, we want to provide students with motivation in the form of a book vending machine!
For many of our students, the first time they pick up a book is in our classrooms. My favorite quote by Garrison Keillor is "A book is a gift you can open again and again." We want to foster a love of reading and lifelong learning. The majority of our students do not have reading materials at home. By providing a book vending machine, we can encourage kids to learn, build their home library, as well as grow and develop their reading skills. Putting books in the hands of our students is the key to promoting a lifelong love of reading!
As a school, tokens to receive a book would follow our PBIS plan which rewards positive behavior and good attendance. Once the student demonstrates that positive behavior, the student would be rewarded with the special Inchy token which can then be used to receive their favorite book from the vending machine. The child gets excited to receive their very own book in an exciting way. It’s theirs to keep! As a bonus, to celebrate student birthdays, each student would receive a token allowing them to select a book on their special day (½ birthday for those with summer birthdays).
