Book Nooks and Learning Spaces for Middle School Learners.
My students need furniture such as a rug and comfortable seating to make an inviting and aesthetic space to explore and discuss their learning. They also need texts that are relevant to their lives.

My Students
My students part of a small neighborhood school in a high poverty, highly transient urban district, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are bright and insightful individuals, who need a safe and comfortable space in order to be able to feel safe and cared for in the classroom.
In our district, chronic absenteeism is a consistent problem. We also struggle with students that are failing subjects, and are disengaged in the learning process. The struggle in a middle school setting is how to keep students engaged in the learning process; so that they come to school on a regular basis, and are putting forth the effort in class. Once a student feels safe and comfortable, they are able to truly explore new ideas and knowledge, and express their thoughts and ideas freely.
Our students are part of an arts initiative, bringing arts strategies into the classroom in order to increase student engagement and achievement.
My Project
Creating a safe and comfortable environment is a key ingredient in engaging students at the middle school level. By giving my students some "creature comforts" for reading activities, such as a rug and alternative seating; they can explore their content and collaborate with their peers in a comfortable and fun environment. In addition, my students will have access to novels that have characters that they can truly relate to, from similar backgrounds and circumstances. Having students be able to relate and connect to what they read is a key ingredient in engaging those students who can be disengaged from school at this critical time in their development. By giving them literature to discuss that is relative to their lives, it will increase their involvement in the reading process.
