My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, or by grandparents and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". One thing they can always look forward to in Ms. Doak's class is that there will always be someone who loves them and is looking out for what's best for them.

My Project

These book boxes will help my students organize their book choices for independent reading and allow them to hold several different options for their independent reading time.

The carpet will allow them to have a comfortable and safe way to enjoy a shared reading or read aloud from the teacher or to have a comfortable place to enjoy free reading time.

The carpet will also serve as a place where the students and I can gather to have a morning meeting to gauge how the students are feeling that morning, to get to know each other, and to have a morning meeting to go over the objectives of the day.
