We need a loveseat, chair, ottoman, and an area rug so we can create a comfortable space to read in our library.

About My Students

Three students are leading this project. They hold leadership roles in the school. They are members of National Junior Honor Society, student library assistants, members of the student leadership team, and mentors to 6th grade students. Below, they introduce themselves and what the library means to them.

"When I first entered middle school, I had just moved and hadn’t met many people yet. The library became, and still is, my happy place." -Paula

"I’m a seventh grader who is in the library club. The library is my favorite spot and I want to help others read fun new books and learn what they want to read. Most often, reading is stopped because the tables are full of kids with homework." -Anna

"Before I met my current friends, the library was a place where I could go when all the people I knew were outside playing sports. I want to draw people, who might otherwise not enjoy reading, to the library and give them a nice environment to start enjoying books (not to say that this corner wouldn’t be open to regular library-goers)." - Lucien

The Book Nook will provide a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing themselves. The library encourages all students to advance in the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. Students learn to:

1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.

2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.

3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.

4. Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

In Their Own Words

We want to make students feel welcome and happy in our library. Instead of sitting in classroom chairs at tables we want to provide students with a comfortable space to lounge and read. We want to make the library even more inviting to students, especially those students who haven't found their favorite reading style.

This is a part of our community service work with National Junior Honor Society. We are enjoying creating a volunteer fund-raising project and learning the steps from the start to completion. The leadership and decision-making skills we are gaining from this project prepares us for leadership roles in high school and beyond.

We want to to create a reading corner, a safe, relaxing place to kick back and read during classroom library visits, before and after school, and during lunch. It will be located in the library near the check out counter where it will be accessible to all students. With this project, we want to leave our mark at this school. This is our last year before going to high school and we want to give the next generations of middle school students the same experience we had with the library.
