Book Library for Social Emotional Skill Development Project

My Students

Cleveland Metro Schools has the unfortunate distinction of being the poorest school district in the country. The traumatic affects this has on our children is devastating; our children struggle to get their basic needs met, and as such have a much harder time focusing on academics and future goal development. Despite this, our students want a better life, and are receptive to all adults in their lives who care about them, and try to assist them in getting there. I primarily work with special needs students, who have the highest level of need among our population. Our students are super appreciative, and the smallest things make the biggest difference to them.

My Project

This project is part of a multi faceted plan to help students, both general education and special needs, develop social emotional skills. The books will be used in class interventions to anchor discussions on diversity, empathy, emotional development, behavioral control and racial justice. The students in my school come from high poverty, high need backgrounds, many of whom have experienced a range of traumas. Social emotional skill development is crucial to their academic, social and emotional development. This project is aimed at supporting their needs, as well as prevent behavioral and social emotional difficulties.
