Take yourself back to the first time you saw yourself in a character in a book. You could see yourself in one who could relate to you, someone who could teach you. Well, I want to bring books to my students. With no library or safe access to one, I am determined to make this happen for them.
My students are impoverished and forgotten.
They are teenagers who are often battling not only the "joys" of being a young adolescent, but also the streets, the gangs, the poverty, the racism. However, they are all college-bound and want better for themselves and their families. Without the proper materials, though, it is difficult for them to keep up with their more privileged peers.
My Project
My students read one book a month outside of anything we are doing in class. They are required to actively participate in the reading through projects, presentations, and writing. With these books I am requesting, not only do they find characters they can relate to and learn from, but they are increasing their vocabulary, their world-view, and their reading levels.
These books will improve my classroom because the books I currently have have become a bit tattered.
New books make my students know that they are worth it. They will also provide an opportunity for them to have access to books and stories they might have never heard of without this project.
