My Students

I feel one of my most important jobs as a reading teacher is to encourage students to be lifelong readers. Often the students in my reading classes come to me as discouraged readers. They are behind, and many have decided to hate reading. I want to help my students find ways to practice reading in new, exciting ways.

Every year when my reading students leave my classroom, I want them see how much they have improved.

I want their reading level to improve, but, more importantly, I want their confidence and excitement about reading to improve.

My Project

These books are going to be used for book groups during our end of year poetry unit. Students are often intimidated by poetry and these books in verse will help show them how accessible poetry can be.

Poetry can be a powerful tool to connect students to their world.

I want them to see how accessible poetry can be. During this unit we will both read and write poetry. The best way to teach writing and by showing students mentor texts as examples. Each of these books will be used to provide examples of powerful poetry.

These books cover a wide variety of topics, themes, and reading levels. Students will be able to choose a book that interests them, which will increase motivation.
