As a teacher in the Big Picture Learning network of schools, I am busy preparing tenth grade students for college. My school serves an urban, high needs population that rarely has access to valuable educational resources.
As a part of their four year graduation requirement, my students are expected to write an autobiography of at least seventy pages in length. This year, we want our students to study a variety of different memoirs so that they will be able to analyze the art of telling a story. The problem is: we don't have any books!
In order for all of this to happen, my students need access to books. Our students will benefit tremendously from not only reading a variety of different memoirs while in their book groups, but from discovering new and interesting ways to tell their own story.
