This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." ~ Maya Angelou
My students love to "read" books, but all too often they cannot find the books on the topic they love.
I teach children with special needs in a Kindergarten Special Day class in a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students' qualifying conditions range from Mild/Severe Intellectual Disability to Autism, Speech/Language Disorder, and Specific Learning Disability. My students love to listen to stories read aloud and to "read" books in our classroom library, but I am finding that they (and I) are having a hard time finding the books they love to read because we have no way to organize the books by topic or author. They just randomly choose one book after another, and in rifling through the books, more chaos ensues.
My Project
First, I will be able to organize the books by topic and author by labeling the book bins with pictures and words. We will be able to find books according to specific authors or by topic. I will be able to guide each student to the books they want instead of rifling through every book we have in class trying to find a book on the topic that students want to read. The picture labels will empower my students to search on their own, and the words will help my higher students with their academic goals of word recognition.
Your donations will make our classroom library organized and student-accessible with new book bins.
It will provide the teacher and the students the chance to access the exact books the students are interested in and allow the teacher to guide each student much easier to the right book.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
