Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are non-verbal and are in need of a variety of books that have pictures to support their ability to comprehend what is read to them.
My classroom is in need of books that my children can interact with, bring home, and connect to on a daily basis. There is not enough money in the budget for me to buy the books needed for each of my students to have this opportunity.
If each of my children had the opportunity to have short predictable texts read to them, with plenty of pictures to support the main ideas, my students could flourish. During our literacy block, my students could listen to a read aloud, and follow along in their own books. They would be able to keep these books in their own book box, and have the opportunity to read them whenever they want. This will create a sense of ownership, which will then foster a love for reading.
My students would also get to bring these books home in order to practice with their parents who often have no access to books. My students are constantly asking to bring home books to showcase their successes in reading; however, I do not have the resources to provide them with this opportunity. We are in need of a variety of books that will help support our students at school and at home.
Getting these books would make a world of difference to my students with severe special needs. Being able to understand and verbalize their favorite parts and favorite character would help them feel more like part of the general education, and would enable them to be included in a variety of guided reading groups.
