Book Clubs For Kids

I am a first year teacher, and I teach in a rural school in Alabama. My students are 2nd graders with a range of abilities. My school is a Title I school, which simply means that we have a high number of students that live in poverty in our school. I teach all subjects, and I have special needs students in my classroom.

Reading is a vital part of any classroom setting. It is important for students to interact with one another through reading. As you know, our economy has suffered this year. Due to this, our state has cut the money that they normally allow teachers to by supplies and materials for their classroom.

As I mentioned above, reading is a vital part of the learning process. I have found that students enjoy reading in groups. The books that I have chosen for the book club are books that are very popular among 2nd graders. I have other books in these same series however, I do not have enough copies for my students to participate in a book club. The students would use the books during center time. They would read a certain amount of pages before center time, and then they will discuss the book with fellow classmates. The students would be discussing things such as personal connections made to the book, summarizing, questioning, and many other aspects that aide in the development of reading comprehension.
