This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright fifth graders who are hungry to learn about the world.

I teach 30 amazing students, many of whom are English Language Learners and come from a low socio-economic background.

My school is located in San Leandro, a very diverse city in the Bay Area. My school offers the best practices in English Language Development and encourages students to celebrate their cultural diversity in a safe community. Our elementary school provides a rigorous academic experience with an emphasis on collaborative learning and community.

My Project

The book "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia tells the story of three sisters who travel to Oakland, CA during the summer of 1968. This story will be used during distance learning, with students reading and discussing the book together online.

Engaging students has never been more important.

Distance learning has brought many challenges and teachers are rising to the occasion to bring students engaging learning. What better way to hook students than with a good book? "One Crazy Summer" is the perfect way to get my students excited about reading and discussing a story. My students are the same age as the main character and live down the road from the setting. The story has many parallels to our current world, which provides an excellent base for conversation and learning.
