Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Becoming a reader helps ensure success in many, many aspects of school and beyond. I am a 6th grade English Language Arts teacher in a Bronx middle school with the majority of students from low income families.

Trying to compete with all the latest electronic gadgets and technology is difficult when trying to engage students in reading. Yet, without excellent reading skills, students tend to not have much success in school. Finding books that middle school boys and girls will want to read has been a constant struggle. I have found that students like to read series books where they can relate to a character and grow and learn with that character.

Using book clubs allows students to share the experience of reading an exciting book with others. Students become more engaged in the reading experience when a small group of students read the same book because they can share what they've read with their peers and friends, and it becomes a more social event.

Your donation can help create book clubs for my middle school students to keep them away from the iPods and DS games and grabbing novels for their entertainment and ultimately, for their education.
