This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The International Book Club is a partnership between TYWLS Bronx in NYC and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Kilkenny, Ireland. The students are currently reading "Wildflower Girl" by Marita Conlon-McKenna.

The TYWLS Bronx book club is comprised of 10 female students of varying English language proficiency levels.

The focus of the program is to foster a lifelong love of literature, while raising the level of literacy in both grade level and struggling readers.

My Project

On May 6th, students will participate in a celebration of the year-long book club. During this celebration, students will explore the accomplishments of Hispanic female writers and introduce their findings to their families, in an effort to foster a collaborative, familial approach to literacy development. The event will culminate in the presentation of vouchers for each student, for the purchase of a book of their choice.

This project represents the culmination of a year-long effort to promote literacy among English language learners.

The gift of the voucher is meant to reward them for their efforts while fostering independent reading through the purchase of a self-selected book.
