Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"All that is necessary for a student is access to a library." --Thomas Jefferson, 1790. I am a Teacher Librarian at a middle school in Northern California. My students learn each week the love of learning and the joy of reading. My students visit the library weekly and look forward to seeing what new books have come in and are available to checkout.

My students love the opportunity to find a book that they want to read, along with learning new 21st Century skills.

My students participate in book clubs in their English class at all grade level. The library give students the opportunity to checkout the book club book they chose to continue reading at home. It, also, gives students the opportunity to read one of the other books in the book club that they could not pick.

My students love that the library offers them this opportunity to continue to build their reading skills, their love of reading, and the opportunity to choice something they enjoy to read beyond the required classroom reading.

My Project

Book clubs offer readers a way to develop their reading skills, their comprehension skills, their conversation skills, and their social skills. The students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade break into book clubs each quarter, in their English class, and choose a book to read within that group. Each group reads a different book. These books are in different genres, like historical fiction, graphic novels, fantasy, or dystopian.

The library is a place where students can come to find that book that will take them into this new world.

In English, students get to pick one book from the selection for their book club. Yet in many cases, students find two books that they really want to read. Having copies of the book club books in the library allows students to read that other book that peaked their interest.

Unfortunately, teachers only have enough copies of each book in their classroom to be used during class time. Sometimes students want to be able to continue reading their book at home to do their homework. This is another reason it is important that the library have copies of the books being used in the book clubs in English class.

The main goal of this project is giving students access to these books beyond their classroom, to keep them reading, and continually developing their literacy skills.
